Grevillea
The grevillea has been in Australia for as long as anyone can remember and it is Australia’s largest genus of protea with around 350 species. Like a lot of plants in Australia this is one the only place that this species can be found growing as a natural plant. In the world of amenity horticulture the grevillea cultivars that are purchased at nurseries are valued for their robust nature for the main part but that said there is other features like their ability to survive on not too much water, the colours of the flowers, their ability to attract birds. All of the grevillea plants are evergreen (plants that retain their leaves throughout the year) and if they are treated well have the potential to have a long flower blooming season.
There is a lot of different types of grevillea cultivars and the all have their advantages and their disadvantages. It is important to ensure that you are well informed as to what these are before you make your selection got the grevillea that you want to achieve what you deem to be your desired result and achieve the reality that you want. For example there is the grevillea rosmarinifolia that is one of the taller grevillea and has the ability to grow up to seven foot with spider like red flower clusters. Then there is the grevillea juniperina which is often used as a ground cover commonly known as the spider flower it has small prickly leaves and at times has orange yellow flowers that are for the most part red this grevillea can also be used as a hedge as well.
As far living environment of the grevillea’s is concerned they require full sunshine, good drainage, and they should not be given fertilizers that has high levels of phosphorus. Once you have them from the nursery before you put them in the ground put some osmocote in the hole and water regularly. I put grevillea’s into people’s houses all the time and I am sure that they would do nicely in your front or back yard.
